What Aircon Installation Actually Costs in Gqeberha
Why two quotes for the same room can differ by thousands - and how to tell which one is honest.
The honest answer to "what does it cost to install an aircon?" is that nobody can tell you over the phone without lying slightly. What we can do is explain exactly what moves the number, so when quotes land on your desk you can read them properly.
The five things that actually drive the price
1. Capacity
Bigger units cost more, and the jump is not linear. The gap between 9 000 and 12 000 BTU is modest; the gap between 24 000 and 36 000 is substantial, because you move into heavier compressors, larger pipe sizes and often three-phase power. Use our size calculator to sanity-check what you are being quoted for.
2. Indoor unit type
A wall-mounted split is the cheapest thing to buy and the cheapest thing to fit. A ceiling cassette costs more for the unit and considerably more in labour, because it has to be set into a ceiling, supported properly, and have its condensate managed in a void. Ducted systems add the entire cost of ductwork, plenums and diffusers on top.
3. Pipe run length
This is the one that catches people out. A "back-to-back" installation - indoor unit on one side of a wall, outdoor unit directly behind it - is the cheapest scenario that exists. Every additional metre of refrigerant pipe adds copper, insulation, trunking, labour, and often extra gas.
On a double-storey home where the condenser must go at ground level, a fifteen-metre run is normal, and it can add a meaningful amount to the job.
4. Electrical work
Most air conditioners need their own dedicated circuit and an isolator at the outdoor unit. If your distribution board has a spare way and the cable route is simple, this is minor. If the board is full, or the wiring is not rated for the load, it is not minor at all.
This is the single most common hidden exclusion in cheap quotes. Always ask whether electrical work is included.
5. Access and making good
Scaffolding, chasing pipework into walls, core-drilling through face brick, working at height over a roof - all of it is time. A straightforward ground-floor installation and an awkward second-storey one are different jobs even with identical equipment.
What a proper quote itemises
If a quote is a single lump sum with no breakdown, you cannot compare it to anything. Ours separates:
- The exact make, model and capacity - not "18 000 BTU unit"
- Copper pipe run length, insulation, brackets and trunking
- Condensate drainage and where it discharges
- Electrical scope - dedicated circuit, isolator, any DB work
- Commissioning: vacuum, gas charge, airflow check, handover
- Labour, rubble removal and making good
The cheap-quote trap. The lowest number on the table has usually excluded something. The three most common exclusions are electrical work, pipe run beyond three metres, and making good after drilling. A quote that is 20% cheaper but excludes all three is not cheaper - it just moves the cost to a later invoice you were not expecting.
Questions worth asking any installer
- How did you arrive at this capacity? If the answer is "that's what we always put in a room this size", keep looking.
- Is the electrical work included? Get it in writing.
- How many metres of pipe are in the price, and what does extra cost?
- Will you pull a vacuum before charging? Skipping evacuation leaves moisture in the system and shortens its life considerably. It takes time, so it is a corner that gets cut.
- What happens if it fails in eighteen months? Warranty is only worth what the company behind it is worth.
What you should expect to spend over the unit's life
The purchase is not the whole cost. A correctly sized inverter unit, serviced annually, will cost less over ten years than a cheaper oversized fixed-speed unit that is never maintained - usually by a wide margin once electricity is counted. Our running cost calculator lets you put real numbers to that.
