Air Conditioning in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)
From the beachfront to the northern areas and out to the industrial belt - we cover the whole metro, for homes and for business.
What we see on the ground here
Gqeberha is a difficult city to air condition well, and most of the reasons are environmental rather than technical.
The wind is relentless, and it carries sand and salt. The city stretches from an exposed beachfront through established leafy suburbs to a serious industrial belt, which means a contractor working here needs to handle a one-bedroom flat in Humewood and a factory in Struandale with equal competence. And because so much of the housing stock predates air conditioning entirely, retrofitting into older face-brick and cavity-wall construction is the norm rather than the exception.
We are based here and we work across the whole metro every day. That means we know which suburbs eat condenser coils, where the pipe runs are always longer than the customer expects, and which centre managers need two weeks notice before anyone brings a scaffold through the loading bay.
Across the metro: the single biggest determinant of equipment life in Gqeberha is distance from the sea. Within about three kilometres of the coast, coated condenser coils and twice-yearly cleaning are not an upsell - they are the difference between a unit lasting twelve years and one lasting five.

Asked locally
Do you cover the whole of Gqeberha?
Yes - the full metro. Beachfront suburbs like Summerstrand, Humewood and Kings Beach, the central and western suburbs including Newton Park, Walmer, Mill Park, Mount Croix, Framesby and Lorraine, the northern areas, and the industrial areas of Struandale, Deal Party, Neave, Korsten and Markman. We also cover Kariega, Despatch and down the coast to Jeffreys Bay.
Are you familiar with Port Elizabeth's older housing stock?
Very. A large share of our residential work is retrofitting modern systems into homes built long before air conditioning was standard - solid and cavity face brick, timber floors, limited ceiling voids and distribution boards with no spare ways. These jobs need pipe routes and electrical scope planned on the site visit rather than discovered on installation day.
Can you handle large commercial projects in the metro?
Yes. Commercial and industrial work is our core business: VRF plant, ducted systems, full ventilation and extraction, fire-rated ducting and cold rooms, for retail fit-outs, offices, warehouses and food processing facilities. We work to the main contractor programme and commission properly before handover.

How the metro divides, from an HVAC point of view
Gqeberha is not one climate. For specification purposes it splits into three bands, and the band your building sits in changes what we put in it.
| Band | Areas | What it means for equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Coastal, under 2 km | Summerstrand, Humewood, Kings Beach, Schoenmakerskop | Coated coils essential, twice-yearly condenser washing, corrosion-resistant hardware |
| Mid, 2 to 8 km | Walmer, Newton Park, Mill Park, Mount Croix, Framesby | Coated coils advisable, annual to twice-yearly service |
| Inland and northern | Lorraine, Kabega, Bluewater Bay, northern areas | Heat load dominates over corrosion; size for afternoon sun |
The wind, and why it matters more here
Gqeberha's prevailing wind is relentless and it carries more than salt. Fine sand, grass seed and dust get driven into outdoor condenser coils at a rate that genuinely surprises people moving here from inland cities.
The practical consequence: condenser cleaning intervals that would be generous in Gauteng are inadequate here. A coil 40% blocked looks clean from three metres away and is costing you money every hour the unit runs.
Working in the older housing stock
A large share of Gqeberha's housing predates air conditioning entirely. Solid and cavity face brick, timber floors, limited or no ceiling void, and distribution boards with no spare ways. Retrofitting into these is normal work for us, but it changes the job:
- Pipe routes have to be planned, not improvised. Long runs need larger line sizing to avoid capacity loss.
- Electrical scope is frequently the biggest variable. We check the DB on the site visit so it is in the quote, not a surprise.
- Core drilling through double-skin brick needs the right equipment and careful making good.
- Nobody wants trunking across the front elevation of a period home. Routes through roof spaces and rear elevations cost more and look immeasurably better.
Industrial Gqeberha
Struandale, Deal Party, Neave, Korsten and Markman carry a different set of problems: airborne particulate, continuous duty, welding and paint fumes, and plant that cannot be taken offline during production. Filtration grade, coil accessibility and service scheduling all have to suit the environment rather than being inherited from a domestic specification.
Booking a visit in Gqeberha
Tell us the suburb, the type of property and what the system is doing. If it is a quote we will arrange a site visit, free and with no call-out fee. If something has broken, call or WhatsApp rather than using the form - it reaches us faster and we can usually tell you over the phone whether it is urgent.
Useful before you call: our size calculator if you are planning an installation, the running cost calculator if you are comparing options, and the troubleshooter if something is misbehaving.
We cover installation, servicing, repairs, ducting and cold rooms across this area. See all services or read more about how we install and size systems.
